The King of Dagbang, His Royal Majesty, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II will today, Monday, 17th February, 2020 donate hundreds of motorcycle crash helmets to leaders of the various political parties in the country.
The major beneficiaries will be the governing New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress at a short ceremony in Yendi.
The move is to ensure that all political motor riders wear crash helmets whilst on the campaign trail to drastically reduce road accidents.
The Northern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority (N.R. S.A), Mr. Alexander Ayatah who confirmed this to The Custodian said National officers of the political parties, particularly, Youth Organizers as well as Regional Directors of the Ghana Education Service have all been invited to participate in the forum.
The National Road Safety Authority last year appointed the Yaa-Na as road safety ambassador to champion public education against indiscipline and the reckless use of the road.
Mr. Ayatah stated that the Road Safety ambassador is mindful of the safety of Ghanaians, especially the youth who constitute majority of the country’s population.
According to him, the donation is to inform political parties that “when you go to procure motorcycles for your riders to campaign, buy him or her a crash helmet to wear so that their lives are protected”.
He stressed the parties should ensure recalcitrant and disobedient ones do not ride during the period.
” And if they follow you without crash helmets sack them, so that we can arrive alive”, Mr. Ayatah maintained.
He added that the political parties must show commitment to Safeguard the lives of the people, insisting their participation will mean they are serious and their absence will show they are not prepared to protect the lives of Ghanaians in the Northern region.
The road safety manager indicated some political parties may not be invited because their offices cannot be traced and therefore, the Dagbon king expects the active parties to be present.
Meanwhile, the Overlord of Dagbang Kingdom will also present teaching and learning materials to Directors of GES for onward distribution to schools.
The essence of the presentation is to educate the school children on road safety rules and regulations in the wake of the efforts undertaken by the National Road Safety Authority to reduce the high incident of accidents on the road.
The NRSA boss believes this will help the children to be better users of the road than the current generation of adults.
