Starting January 1, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will introduce a new system. It will replace vehicle number plates’ year of registration with a regional system. DVLA Chief Executive Julius Neequaye Kotey announced that plates will show the region, like “Greater Accra,” at the top. A unique four-digit number follows, ending with a zone code. For example, the plate of a vehicle in Adenta, Greater Accra, will show “AD”. This appears after the number, replacing the year like “25.

Additionally, the DVLA will reform “DV” (Defective Vehicle) plates. These plates are intended for car dealers moving vehicles for repairs or test drives. Nonetheless, private owners misuse them to avoid registration. To fix this, new DV and temporary (TMP) plates will be introduced. A sticker for non-road-ready vehicles will also improve tracking.

On Friday evening, Kotey posted images of the new DV and TMP plates on social media. This initiative aims to curb misuse and enhance vehicle identification across regions.
