The minority Caucus in Parliament has raised serious concerns, alleging that the ruling administration is conducting a deliberate effort to silence opposition voices.
This accusation stems from the recent apprehension and confinement of Kwame Baffoe. He is widely known as Abronye DC. He serves as the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). On September 8, 2025, Abronye DC was taken into custody. He faced charges related to “disruptive behavior to disturb public order.”
Police are detaining him, and he is scheduled to appear in court on september 12, 2025
In a statement released on September 9, 2025, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the 2nd Deputy Whip of the opposition, claimed these actions show a wider strategy. The strategy aims to intimidate individuals who challenge the government’s integrity. It also targets those who question its official stance.
They suggest that the legal system is being misused to target perceived adversaries. They point to the decision to deny bail to Abronye DC as evidence of retribution. This move, they argue, undermines the principles of justice.
The opposition expressed deep worry that such measures erode the democratic foundations upon which Ghana was built. They highlighted a pattern of targeting journalists, social critics, and opposition leaders through unjustified detentions and arrests.
The minority caucus reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring citizens can hold the government accountable without facing retaliation. They criticized the broad and unclear application of legal measures. They asserted that it fails to meet global benchmarks for legal clarity and fairness.
The opposition is calling for a reevaluation of the government’s approach to uphold Ghana’s democratic integrity.
