NIA Slams Social Media Rumors, Confirms Ghana Card Stays Valid for 10 Years!

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a press release to address misinformation circulating on social media regarding the validity period of the Ghana Card.

In a release signed by Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs they clarthat the Ghana Card remains valid for ten (10) years from the date of issuance, with no amendments or proposals to reduce this period.

The clarification comes in response to a flyer suggesting a reduction in the card’s validity period. The NIA emphasized that the current ten-year renewal requirement remains essential, as the physical card includes an estimated lifespan of ten years, and cardholders’ personal features are expected to change over that period, necessitating updated photographs and record verification.

The press release also addressed comments by Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, made during a recent media engagement. His remarks, which have been misrepresented, reflected a proposal to consider shorter update intervals in the future due to rapid technological advancements and the evolving uses of the Ghana Card.

This suggestion was intended to keep the card responsive to technological changes, such as the transition from the initial 2D-Barcode for children under 15 to today’s dual-interface, multipurpose biometric card. However, Mr. Deku did not announce a policy change.

The NIA urged the public to treat circulating information as incorrect and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identity system for all Ghanaians.

lets keep engaging
