Ghanaian broadcaster and singer Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, known for her two unsuccessful Guinness World Records attempts for the longest individual singing marathon, has called out the organizers of her singathon on a fiery TikTok Live session.
The 37-year-old accused organizers of her second singathon of pocketing promised funds, leaving her feeling exploited and unfairly branded “ungrateful.” Her emotional outburst, viewed by thousands, has reignited debates about transparency in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
In December 2024, Asantewaa endured over 121 hours across five grueling days at Heroes Park in Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium, aiming to break the world record.
Disqualified in May 2025 for exceeding rest break limits—her second such rejection after a 2023 attempt—she now claims the real injustice was financial.
“For what? Standing on my feet for 5 days to sing songs?” she vented. “For my country, I am ungrateful? There was a supposed amount of money that never got to me. I didn’t even ask because I didn’t know, but when asked, I said I don’t have it, and those who have it call me ungrateful?”
Asantewaa’s frustration centered on funds from donations, sponsorships, and state support via the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), which she alleges never reached her or her team.
Confined in a glass enclosure, she sang Ghanaian and global hits to promote tourism, only to learn later of money she never saw.
“I did the singathon for myself and my country, like public servants do,” she said, referencing the physical and spiritual toll, including sore throats and fasting with her husband, Kofi Owusu Aduonum, to persevere.
Asantewaa’s journey has been a rollercoaster. Her 2023 Accra singathon drew celebrities and mass donations, only to end in disqualification for rest-rule violations.
I Undeterred, she framed her 2024 attempt as a “spiritual battle,” enduring what she called “attacks” that prompted prayer and fasting.
The May 2025 disqualification, announced via a somber social media post after a Canada vacation, crushed her, but Sunday’s Live showed her fighting spirit intact.
