Member of Parliament for Assin South, Hon Ntim Fordjour has issued a stern rebuke over the prolonged absence of a substantive Defence Minister, labeling the situation a “dangerous gamble” with national security.
In a tweet, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, expressed grave concern that Ghana has been without a confirmed minister to lead the critical defence portfolio for nearly three months following the passing of the previous officeholder.
In a forceful statement, Fordjour warned that this delay recklessly compromises the nation’s territorial integrity. He underscored his alarm by citing the “rapidly deteriorating” security landscape, pointing to persistent conflicts in hotspots like Gbenyiri, Sampa, and Bawku, alongside the destabilizing effects of rampant illegal mining.
“The security of our country is on a path of rapid deterioration,” Fordjour stated. “With over 23,000 citizens displaced and seeking refuge in neighboring nations, no serious government would tolerate such a leadership vacuum in its defence apparatus.”
The lawmaker directly questioned President John Mahama’s hesitation, demanding to know what underlying difficulties have prevented the appointment of a suitable successor. He challenged the President’s capacity to identify a trustworthy candidate from within his own party, the NDC.
Fordjour concluded with an urgent demand for the “immediate appointment of a substantive Minister for Defence,” asserting that a confirmed leader is essential to direct the retooling of the Armed Forces and safeguard the nation’s borders. The statement escalates political pressure on the administration to act swiftly on the critical security vacancy.
